Tolkiens Work is based around the late "classical era" and the early medieval age. The era of the Fall of Rome (which Gondor took a lot of inspiration from) and the Rise of the early Germanic Kingdoms (which Rohan took a lot of inspiration from). During this Time Europe suffered massive Invasions from outside Forces. The Islamic Umayyad Empire invaded Spain and France (in other words Arabs, which were the inspiration for the "Haradrim") which than fought the Germanic Kingdoms of the Visigots or Franks (which Rohan took a lot of Inspiration from), North African Pirates on their Galleys that plundered ships in the mediterranen and enslaved their crew to be sold on slave markets in North Africa. Even attacking coastal settlements and kidnapping the population. (which were the inspiration for the "Corsairs of Umbar" you see in the movie, those guys on the ships that got killed by the ghosts) And the "Sasanian Empire" (basically Persia) which fought the Romans and later Byzantine Empire (which again, Gondor took a lot of inspiration from) for centuries on the Eastern Border. (which the Easterlings are based on, you can see a lot Persian influence on their clothes and armor) Also there were the "Huns" who came from central Asia and pushed the European germanic and slavic tribe into Roman Territory. Massively destabilising it and were a major factor of it's downfall. Which were ultimately stopped in Eastern France. (i don't really see the Huns in Tolkiens work, can't be the orks, the Huns fought on horse with bows while the orks fight on foot in melee) So Tolkien makes a fictional Europe with a fictional Rome and Germanic Kingdoms that fight against fictional Arabs, North African Pirates, Persians and Asians that are invading their lands? Now in modern days non-white people complain that the depiction of Arabs, Middle Easterners and Asians as evil Invaders is racist because it feeds the Ideology of "West Good, all others bad"? Well sorry to say this. But If non-Europeans don't want to be pictured as evil Invaders in a tale of a fictional "classical era"- early middle age Europe. They should have not invaded Europe during this time.

you are missing the point. LOTR IS RACIST, the dwarf are created as lesser people, Tolkien intentionally created the hobbit because "the man of the west" are written to be racist and evil. it why they didn't destroy the ring, they tried to challenge god and got rekt. despite this, many people still celebrate them and miss the point of the story, only the hobbit could avoid the corruption of power... I have never heard of Miyazaki views. but I arrived at the same conclusion years ago, the LOTR story is problematic not becaue of what Tolkien intent or who Tolkien is as a person, but that most people will NEVER UNDERSTAND that the man of the west is already corrupted and evil before the set foot and colonised the land from the native. basically you confused Hayao Miyazaki view as if it is about Tolkien as a person and not LOTR AS A MOVIE. the prime example of this is the movie change the nature of the battle of helm deep.

In the book, several years actually passed when Bilbo left The Shire for Rivendell, Gandalf found out about The Ring, went to Isengard to research it, came back to Bag End to tell Frodo about the Ring and tell him of the journey he must embark to destroy it. Several months also passed during the Hobbits's journey from The Shire to the town of Bree. Meanwhile, Moria was being invaded.

I’ve read a great deal of Tolkien and was already familiar with the tale of what happened to Celebrian that explains her absence from MIDDLE EARTH during the LOTR. I have always wondered something, however. *WHY* did Galadriel--the greatest elf-sorcerer of Middle Earth--why did she never teach Celebrian some of the magic that many centuries earlier the Maia Melian--who was merely a friend of Galadriel--taught Galadriel in order that she might one day rule over her own elf-realm? Galadriel’s magic is powerful to have protected the borders of Lothlorien for centuries (much as Melian’s magical “girdle” had protected Doriath long before), *and* Galadriel’s magic was mighty enough after Lothlorien repelled an attack of Sauron’s orcs and trolls coming from Dol Guldur to utterly *destroy* the dark fortress, bringing crashing down all its walls and “revealing all the evil pits beneath it.” So does Tolkien offer *any* explanation for why Galadriel seems not to have taught Celebrian *any* magic in all the decades they spent together, magic that would have allowed Her to *defend* herself when ambushed by orcs ?

No habia impuestos.

While Tolkien was certainly right about commercialization, there are many redeeming qualities about Disney's adaptations as well. They are fun. Additionally, more modern Disney films generally have positive messages. So if my kids are going to watch anything ad nauseum, I don't mind it being Disney.

I personally never liked Narnia for much the same reason, it’s use of fantasy creatures is a complete mess and I like Tolkien dislike the use of religious allegory, while I’m not as apposed of allegory to the extent of Tolkien, I’m however for dogmatic and clearly religious ones as there abundance of in Narnia. But as Tolkien points out a matter of taste. Tolkien was a true gentleman always keeping criticism out of the view of the public and it was always tried to be constructive for most part when it were possible. The thing is he likely would have disliked the adoption of his own work to a much higher degree.

I am a big fan of lord of the rings both the books and the movies. But I can see where Miyazaki is coming from. If you take the romanticist world view of middle earth and turn it in to a real life ideology and applied it to the modern day you would get an ideology not that far removed from Nazism. This is not because Tolkien is a Nazi it’s because they both draw inspiration from the same romantic interpretation of North European mythology. Warner’s opera Der Ring des Nibelungen is a story about a magic ring that grants the bearer the power to rule the world. Sounds familiar? And here is a quote from Adolf Hitler “whoever wants to understand National Socialist Germany must know Wagner”

Well, the more I hear about Miyazaki, The more disenfranchised with him I am. Both and how he treats his son and what he said about his son and the lack of being a good father for his son and also is hateful words toward Tolkien… That paired with his excusing Japanese war crimes and some of his movies all compounded to give him a pretty negative character. I still enjoy his films, but I don’t really like him anymore

I - who love Tolkien's writing in LOTR - feel Miyazaki's comments are fair since he also lives as he preaches. His works are extremely complex when it comes tomatters of morality and what drives people compared to Tolkien's. With that said, I find Tolkien's qualities simply lie elsewhere (world building, prose, descriptions of nature, etc.) and are so strong there that I don't mind much the simple good vs. evil dynamic.

I'm a big fan of LOTR, but I do not think that Miyazaki's arguments can be so easily dismissed, especially in the context of Tolkein's wider works. It is true that Orcs etc are not a 'race' in the real world, historic, racists sense - but they do consistently portray the attributes that are assigned to 'inferior races' by racists. So while I don't think Tolkein wrote them with a racist intent, he certainly gave people who want to read justification for bigotry something they could use - and we see this today in the use of 'orc' as a perjorative. My preferred interpretation of Tolkein's orcs is that they are the depiction of what happens to people under industrialised warfare, debased, devalued as lives, and instrumentalised against a distant enemy by leaders who are depraved and uncaring - and some of Tolkein's ideas about the origins of orcs (and industrialisation) seem to cohere with that. But that doesn't stop others from reading support for bigotry into their descriptions - particularly if they are seeking support for bigotry of their own. We also see that there is a very consistent assignment of certain features to humans who are less civilised and more debased - swarthiness, sallowness, etc. This does play into an 'asiatic horde' type of thinking which is weirdly commonplace under the surface still in the modern West. I think Tolkein does traffic in these kinds of lazy stereotypes sometimes, much as he consciously opposes them at others, such as when Sam reflects on the death of a Southron in a skirmish with Faramir's men. The two blue wizards that went into the East? I don't think they indicate significantly that Tolkein intended to show the East as worthy of salvation. The point of the wizards is that each of them fails in their mission, distracted by some hyperfocus or other, except for Mithrandir who remains true to the cause. They're maybe a line in the Silmarillion at most. Does this mean that Tolkein must be entirely condemned? Well, no, I don't think so. I think he did enough to pick out and contradict racist ideas in his works and I would suggest it's people who read support for their own racism into his works that should be condemned. But that said, I'm about as far from having those asiatic stereotyped features that he employs so regularly in his descriptions of evil, so maybe I find it easier to look past those and see the sections where he contradicts them, and overtly stated antiracist positions. I can see that for a person who recognises tropes deployed against themselves or people like them, the balance of where his works falls might feel quite different, and his antiracist sections might seem like poor compensation for the really quite consistent use of those stereotypes. Either position is reasonable, it's not something that I think can be 'proved' or 'disproved'. More of a question of how significant we each think different aspects of his work are.

I agree with the arguments presented. Even after describing the reasons for Myazaki's opinion on the villains of lotr it feels like he is generalizing and making a huge leap to conclude that orcs and such are actually representations of real life easterns. I respect Myiazaki a lot for his craft but it seems to me that he is a man of extreme opinions. Well, it is not because someone is very competent that they are going to be right about everything.
